Overview
If you’re anywhere near Randburg and craving proper wood-fired pizza, Coalition Pizza at 49 Hillcrest Ave, Blairgowrie, Randburg, 2194, South Africa, is one of those places you don’t just visit once. You go back. I’ve been there on a laid-back Friday night and again during a midweek lunch rush, and each time the energy felt warm, unpretentious, and genuinely local.
The first thing that stands out is the aroma from the wood-fired oven. There’s real science behind why that matters. According to the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana in Italy, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza should be baked at high temperatures, typically above 400°C, for a short time to achieve that airy crust with slight char. You can taste that technique here. The crust is blistered yet soft in the center, with a balanced chew that tells you the dough has been properly fermented. Long fermentation, often 24 to 48 hours, breaks down gluten and enhances flavor, and you can sense that depth in every bite.
The menu is refreshingly focused. You won’t find pages of random dishes. Instead, there’s a tight selection of classic and creative pizzas, fresh salads, and a few carefully chosen sides. I once ordered their margherita as a benchmark. It sounds simple, but simplicity is where quality shows. The tomato base tasted bright and slightly sweet, the mozzarella melted evenly without turning greasy, and the basil added that unmistakable herbal lift. When ingredients are this straightforward, there’s nowhere to hide, and that’s exactly why it works.
On another visit, I tried one of their more adventurous combinations with cured meats and roasted vegetables. What impressed me was the balance. Too many gourmet pizzerias overload toppings, but here the base remains the hero. The structure holds, slices don’t collapse, and the flavors are layered instead of chaotic. It’s the kind of attention to detail you expect from chefs who understand both technique and restraint.
From a service perspective, the staff know their menu. I asked about ingredient sourcing and was told they prioritize fresh produce and quality cheeses, which aligns with broader industry research showing that diners increasingly value transparency and provenance. Organizations like the World Tourism Organization have highlighted how food experiences shape local travel decisions, and places like this clearly contribute to Randburg’s growing reputation as a casual dining destination.
The atmosphere also deserves mention. It’s relaxed but not careless. Families, groups of friends, and even solo diners feel comfortable here. During one of my visits, I noticed a table celebrating a birthday while another group was clearly there for a low-key business meeting. That flexibility says a lot about a restaurant’s layout and vibe. The seating arrangement encourages conversation without making you feel cramped, and the open kitchen concept subtly builds trust. You can see the pizzas being assembled and slid into the oven, which adds to the overall dining experience.
Reviews from regular patrons often highlight consistency, and that matches what I’ve seen personally. Consistency is one of the hardest things to maintain in hospitality. It requires standardized processes, reliable suppliers, and proper staff training. When a restaurant manages to deliver the same quality crust, sauce, and service across multiple visits, that’s not luck. It’s operational discipline.
In terms of location, Blairgowrie is convenient for both locals and visitors exploring Randburg. Parking is generally manageable, although peak evenings can get busy. It’s worth noting that, like any popular spot, you may need to wait during high-traffic hours. Calling ahead or arriving a bit earlier can make the experience smoother.
What makes this place stand out isn’t flashy decor or over-the-top presentation. It’s the fundamentals: a well-crafted menu, authentic wood-fired pizza, attentive service, and a welcoming environment. When those elements come together, you end up with more than just a meal. You get a dining experience that feels grounded, honest, and worth repeating.

This is the new location for coalition that was previously near Rosebank. I have previously tried the pizzas and they were pretty good, thin based with thick crust. I most recently came here for coffee and unfortunately not the best. The service was lacking a little as well. You order at the bar but the staff are not very friendly and ignore you for quite a while. The setting is beautiful and it seems to be a popular location for cyclists. I don’t think I’ll rush back but would come again, maybe to try the bagels.
Lovely relaxed setting, great for parties of 4 and more in my opinion. Good service and ample parking, also a lot of other shops in the vicinity. The pizza is good, but I find the menu too limited and somewhat boring. This experience is far more for the setting than the food
Food very good, menu is smaller. Pizza very decent. Can be a bit scarce in ingredients depending on pizza. Close to the road, thus a bit loud at times. Relaxed atmosphere. Dessert is decent, but could have a bit more flavour.
The pizza base was spot on! (I do not know of any place in the Gauteng area that gets the pizza base done as one would find it in Naples, Italy) No burnt-charred pieces on the base that are inedible (which some other pizza places seem to think is "artistic" to do). We had the Holtini and Siyani pizza; they were both very pleasant. The Holtini had a bit too much mushroom for my liking/not evenly spread either. Thus, I feel the Siyani won. The Sayani has chilli but is not too hot, which is better for most. I would say though that the Margherita would be an excellent choice/equally as satisfying, especially if you ask for some parmigiano on the side- that's if you weren't in the mood to spend R170 or so on a pizza. Ambience was relaxed, also increased by the little garden and fresh flowers on the tables, decor is well chosen and the restaurant has an elevated dining experience feel due to the wine glasses on all the tables. *Suggestion* I would maybe request the kitchen to cut the coppa ham, on the Holtini pizza, into 4 smaller pieces maybe so that it is distributed evenly on the pizza slice; at the moment the whole piece of meat goes into your mouth in the first bite and none left for the rest of the piece. *Suggestion* would be really nice for more non-alcoholic drink options, maybe something like Oran Soda/Aranciata or San Pellegrino or Crodino. *Would be nice* for a little more cheese.
